Opinion: Why a direct flight to Africa from Denver would be “two-way transformational” A direct flight between America’s mile-high city and Africa’s mile-and-a-half-high city seemed like a good idea when former Mayor Michael Hancock and Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington told me about it, but it never came to fruition. A few weeks ago, I saw for myself the strategic importance of connecting Denver to Addis Ababa and with it, the entire continent of Africa.Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, is the hub of Ethiopian Airlines, the largest airline in Africa. Its planes fly to 62 cities in 38 African countries. Currently, there are no direct flightsbetween Denver and Addis or any African city. Denver International Airport is our nation’s midcontinent hub for international flights so that needs to change.A direct connection to Ethiopia is valuable in other ways. When the Atlanta Airport, the busiest in the world, added a direct flight to Addis Ababa earlier this year, the city’s mayor heralded the business opportunities that would benefit both communities. Solid play by minor league call-ups keeping Avs steady amid long-term absences of Samuel Girard, Artturi Lehkonen For the Avalanche to get to where it wants to go, its call-ups need to keep delivering. After depth was an issue for the Avs last year, especially down the stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs, this year’s team is getting consistent play from its fringe players promoted from the minor league Colorado Eagles.Case in point: Forward Ben Meyers got called up from the AHL on Monday, then promptly went out and scored that night in the Avs’ 6-5 comeback win over Calgary at Ball Arena.“I thought (Meyers) was rock-solid defensively, and then he also chipped in a big goal,” Avs head coach Jared Bednar said. “It’s as good of an outcome for calling up a player as you can imagine.”Two long-term absences by defenseman Samuel Girard (NHL/NHLPA players assistance program) and winger Artturi Lehkonen (neck injury) created a need for the Avs to lean on the Eagles for NHL-ready players. In addition to Meyers, other fringe players who have made an ...

Coloradans have a mile-high debt problem. Here’s why.

Coloradans have a mile-high debt problem. Here’s why. Colorado has one of the most physically fit populations of any state in the U.S., but the same can’t be said regarding fiscal fitness.Colorado households are weighed down with the heaviest debt burdens of any state, even when looking at more expensive places to live like California and Hawaii, according to a study from Forbes Advisor.Nowhere do consumers carry a higher share of debt relative to their incomes than in Colorado, which could prove problematic if years of heavy borrowing across every sector of the economy triggers the next big downturn as Fed watcher Jim Grant is predicting. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Household Debt and Credit Report measures mortgages, car loans, student loans, credit cards and other personal debts. It is essentially an exercise in stepping on the debt scale.Forbes Advisor, a personal finance website, took the debt totals for each state for 2023 and divided those by population estimates from last year to come up with a per capita househ...

Mortgage rates hit lowest rate since August Mortgages rates dipped below 7% this week for the first time since August — and they could keep sliding further. After reaching their highest point in the last two decades in late October, mortgage rates have been dropping for the last seven weeks, falling to an average of 6.95% this week for a 30-year-fixed rate mortgage, according to data from Freddie Mac released on Thursday.“It’s great news for buyers and sellers,” said Oscar Wei, chief economist for the California Association of Realtors. There are signs, too, that the rate could keep dropping. At their meeting Wednesday, Federal Reserve officials announced they expect to cut interest rates next year even further than previously indicated. After that announcement, the site Mortgage News Daily — which tracks rates on a daily basis, rather than weekly like Freddie Mac — saw interest rates drop by 20 basis points from the prior day.Wei expects that next week’s Freddie Mac average, which will take into account ...

He didn’t see them as human beings,” the attorney, Mike Gottlieb, told the eight-person jury.“It’s dangerous for them to be Ruby Freeman or Shaye Moss because of Giuliani and his co-conspirators,” Gottlieb said.Freeman and Moss are seeking $24 million apiece in reputational damages, as well as punitive and emotional damages in the case.Gottlieb also said that there was a time in Giuliani’s life when, as mayor of New York, he understood and appreciated that civil servants were decent people.“He has no right to offer defenseless civil servants over to a digital mob,” Gottlieb said.Giuliani spent nearly ...

Oakland: DA dismisses double murder case after lawyer found second gun at crime scene OAKLAND — In a move that was reportedly months in the making, the Alameda County District Attorney’s office has dismissed two murder charges against an Oakland man who was accused of killing his girlfriend and a man inside his apartment, court records show. The dismissal was aided in large part by the discovery of a firearm at the crime scene, made by a defense attorney and private investigator, which police investigators had apparently missed, according to the defendant’s lawyer.Franz Lucablue Gadient, 34, had been charged with murdering Mari Alice Shaw, 22, and Jesse Sky Willner, 44, in a November 2021 shooting inside the Oakland apartment where Shaw and Gadient lived. But the defense lobbied for months for prosecutors to dismiss the case, arguing that Gadient had killed an intruder, Willner, in self-defense after Willner opened fire into the home, killing Shaw.At a Dec. 12 court appearance in Oakland, the defense got its wish; prosecutors dismissed both murder co...
