Judge to consider whether Texas can keep oversize buoy barrier on US-Mexico river border AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A federal judge on Tuesday will consider whether Texas can keep a floating barrier on the U.S.-Mexico border as both the Biden administration and Mexico push to remove Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s latest hardline measure to deter migrants from crossing. The scheduled hearing in Austin comes days after Texas, which installed the water barrier on the Rio Grande in July near the border city of Eagle Pass, repositioned the wrecking ball-sized buoys closer to U.S. soil. Texas is being sued by the Justice Department, which argues the barrier could impact relations with Mexico and pose humanitarian and environmental risks. During a trip Monday to Eagle Pass, Abbott said the barrier was moved “out of an abundance of caution” following what he described as allegations that they had drifted to Mexico’s side of the river. “I don’t know whether they were true or not,” Abbott said. It is not clear when U.S. District Judge David Ezra might rule on the barri...

As Tropical Storm Hilary shrinks, desert and mountain towns dig themselves out of the mud CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. (AP) — Crews worked to dig roads, buildings and care home residents out of the mud across a wide swath of Southwestern U.S. desert Monday, as the first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years headed north, prompting flood watches and warnings in half a dozen states. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Tropical Storm Hilary had lost much of its force as it headed to the Rocky Mountains, but warned that “continued life-threatening and locally catastrophic flooding” was expected in parts of the region. Forecasters said the threat for flooding in states farther north on Monday was highest across much of southeastern Oregon into the west-central mountains of Idaho, with potential thunderstorms and localized torrential rains on Tuesday. As Hilary moved east into the neighboring state of Nevada, flooding was reported, power was out and a boil-water order was issued for about 400 households in the Mount Charleston area, where the only road in and o...

Fair minimum wages: Action for decent living conditions in the EU  Parliament approved new rules to ensure minimum wages provide for a decent standard of living in the EU. Parliament has been calling for EU measures to secure a decent income for all workers for a number of years. In-work poverty in the EU has increased over the past decade and economic downturns, like the one experienced globally during the Covid 19 crisis, show adequate minimum wages have an important role in protecting low-wage workers, as they are more vulnerable. In September 2022, MEPs adopted new rules to improve the adequacy of minimum wages. They expect this will lead EU countries to achieve real wage growth and avoid competition on labour costs in the single market, as well as help reduce the gender pay gap, as nearly 60% of minimum wage earners in the EU are women.Find out more about EU measures to safeguard workers’ rights. What does the new EU legislation on minimum wages entail?EU countries will have to make sure their national statutory minimum wage allows for a decent ...

Heavy flooding leaves Lancaster residents stranded inside homes In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Hilary that brought heavy downpours, Lancaster residents have been stuck inside their homes for two days, unable to leave because of the water levels and debris build up on their street. Frustrated neighbors say poor drainage is to blame and any small amount of precipitation leads to flooding and takes a long time to drain. “Where can I go?” said Janis Carroll, a resident in the area. “Whenever we have rain for any type of endurance, it’s a flood. It doesn’t make sense. You can’t drive in it. Your car will get stuck out there. See, it looks like river.”A truck submerged in water after tropical storm Hilary makes landfall (Source: KTLA)Officials with the city of Lancaster told KTLA that it has crews working around the clock to drain neighborhoods.
