NFL Draft Guide: As usual, QBs are coveted in first round The NFL never really stops, so its offseason continues with the draft starting Thursday night. The Carolina Panthers have the No. 1 overall pick and, as usual, a lot of the hype surrounds the quarterbacks. Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson are among the coveted prospects. The other top athletes include edge rushers such as Alabama’s Will Anderson Jr. and Texas Tech’s Tyree Wilson. Cornerbacks — including Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez and Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon — are also likely top 10 selections.Among the draft’s most polarizing prospects is Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter. On talent alone, he might warrant a No. 1 selection. But Carter pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors (reckless driving and racing) and was sentenced to a year of probation and community service in March on charges related to an automobile accident that killed a Georgia teammate and ...

Kershaw reaches 200 wins, other milestones possible

Kershaw reaches 200 wins, other milestones possible Clayton Kershaw reached 200 victories this past week — a reminder of both the left-hander’s excellence and the near-impossibility of a pitcher reaching 300 wins nowadays. The active leader in victories is Justin Verlander with 244, and he’s 40 years old. Only four active pitchers even have 200 wins — Verlander, Zack Greinke (223), Max Scherzer (203) and Kershaw, who made it to 201 by the end of the week. Adam Wainwright is at 195 and could join that group, but he hasn’t pitched yet this year because of a groin injury. The 35-year-old Kershaw is pitching on a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but if he keeps going into 2024, he could reach 3,000 strikeouts. He’s 161 shy of that mark. And if 300 wins is increasingly out of the question, given current patterns of starting pitcher workloads, 300 quality starts is still a possibility for today’s stars. Verlander (327) and Greinke (317) have already surpassed that mark amid little fanfare. Kershaw ...

The end of days for Russia’s church in Ukraine

The end of days for Russia’s church in Ukraine KYIV — President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine has triggered many unintended consequences — from prodding Sweden and Finland to join NATO to turning Russia into a pariah state. And now to the list can be added the wrecking of the Moscow-tied Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), once a useful Kremlin tool of influence. The Ukrainian authorities are considering banning the church — and draft legislation has already been prepared by opposition parties to do just that. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to make an announcement soon about the future of the church, whether there will be an outright ban or an option for the church to form a new one shorn of any ties to the Russian Orthodox Church and its leader, Patriarch Kirill, a vociferous supporter of the invasion. But even without the ban the UOC is in rapid decline, with more priests and worshippers poised to defect to the rival, independent Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). Since the invasion more than ...

UK’s human rights watchdog slams Rishi Sunak’s small boats bill

UK’s human rights watchdog slams Rishi Sunak’s small boats bill LONDON — Rishi Sunak’s flagship bill aimed at curbing cross-Channel migration risks breaching international human rights law, the U.K.’s official rights watchdog warned Monday. In a sharply critical statement ahead of fresh parliamentary scrutiny of the Illegal Migration Bill, the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said it was “seriously concerned” the plan risks placing the U.K. in breach of its obligations.Sunak unveiled the plan in March as part of efforts to cut the number of people using small boats to make the dangerous crossing from French to British shores. The proposed law effectively bans those arriving in the U.K. on small boats from claiming asylum altogether, and sharply curtails routes to challenge U.K. asylum decisions.Ahead of the bill’s report stage in the House of Commons Tuesday, the EHRC spelled out several “key areas of concern,” including reduced protections for victims of trafficking and modern slavery and the pote...

Beer brewed 86 years ago for Edward VIII’s canceled coronation goes on sale (CNN) — Bottles of beer brewed 86 years ago for the coronation of Edward VIII, but which were left unopened upon the event’s cancellation, will go on sale next month.Edward VIII ascended to the British throne in January 1936 following the death of his father, George V. But he abdicated in December of that year ahead of his coronation so that he could marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. The “Coronation Ale” made to celebrate his crowning was therefore never sold — and only discovered 75 years later when work was being carried out in 2011 in the cellars of the Greene King brewery in the southeastern English town of Bury St Edmunds.Several crates of the beer will be auctioned by the pub company on May 5, the day before the coronation of King Charles III, commemorating the occasion, Greene King said in a press release Tuesday. The proceeds from the sale will go to The Prince’s Trust charity, which was founded by the King to support yo...
