Earthquake rocks northwest Nepal, felt as far as India’s capital

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook northwestern Nepal and was felt in neighboring India late Friday, but there were no immediate reports of damage. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 5.6 magnitude quake had a depth of 17. 9 kilometers (11.12 miles) near the mountain town of Jumla, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) northeast of the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu.The quake struck just before midnight when many people already were asleep in their homes. Tremors also were felt in the Indian capital, New Delhi.Earthquakes are common in mountainous Nepal. HARRISON HOT SPRINGS, B.C. — A state of local emergency has lifted in the Village of Harrison Hot Springs, east of Vancouver, just days after it was issued when problems at the local water treatment facility put water availability at risk.A statement from Mayor Ed Wood says two pumps are now in full working order at the plant and an external backup pump is also available, if needed.The treatment plant relies on three working pumps but Wood said two of the pumps failed on Wednesday.Although the remaining pump was able to adequately supply Harrison’s drinking water and firefighting needs throughout the emergency, Wood said he wanted to act proactively, in case the last pump shut down.His statement released Friday cancels the state of local emergency and thanks village staff and outside agencies for their help.A reason for the sudden problems with the two pumps has not been released.This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 3, 2023.The Canadian Press2 teens charged in shooting death of 86-year-old man in Auburn Gresham

CHICAGO — Police say two teens face felony charges in connection with the death of an elderly man last month in the city’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood. A 15-year-old is charged with first-degree murder and a 16-year-old is charged with armed carjacking following the events of Sept. 23. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Less than a week after his death, a foundation has been established in the name of Matthew Perry to help people dealing with addiction. “In the spirit of Matthew Perry’s enduring commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction, we embark on a journey to honor his legacy by establishing the Matthew Perry Foundation, guided by his own words and experiences, and driven by his passion for making a difference in as many lives as possible,” said an inaugural statement establishing the Matthew Perry Foundation on Friday.The Emmy-nominated “Friends” star often spoke publicly about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction. The foundation, which is now accepting donations, cited his desire to be remembered as someone who helped others with substance abuse even more than his sitcom stardom. CHICAGO — A search is underway on Friday for a man missing from his home on the city's Northwest Side, police say. According to Chicago police, officers are looking for 29-year-old Cheng Ding, who has been missing for nearly a month.
